Chair of Human Biology and Genetics
The chair of human biology and genetics dates back to the former sector of morphology (headed by Kalju Põldvere, Jüri Kärner, Aavo-Valdur Mikelsaar) of the Central Medical Laboratory of Faculty of Medicine of Tartu State University founded during years 1961-1962. In the year 1979 the Institute of General and Molecular Pathology (IGMP) was grounded and the sector of morphology was renamed as the laboratory of genetics and molecular cytology. In 1982 it was reorganized to the department of genetics and biotechnology. Thereafter, in 1993, the chair of human biology and genetics was formed joining the department of biotechnology to the department of human biology and genetics (existing from 1991) (head prof. Aavo-Valdur Mikelsaar). (see „Tartu Ülikooli arstiteaduskond 1982-2007, pp. 169-201, TÜ Kirjastus, 2007, www.tyk.ee). Since 2012 the chair of human biology and genetics belongs to the institute of biomedicine.
